Q I don’t have the right legs for skinny jeans (fat knees) and bootcuts make me feel like my mother. I am therefore tempted to try the boyfriend jeans look, as worn by Katie Holmes. Can you give me any tips on getting it right?

A First, find the right jeans. The secret is to get a pair that are relaxed and straight cut on the leg, but not so baggy that your bottom looks like a shapeless mass. These ones by Acne for Lanvin (left, £250, from Browns Focus; 020 7514 0063) are good. This new collaboration is nothing short of brilliant. There are denim evening dresses, coats, bags and even shoes, but the jeans, with their just-slouchy-enough fit and black turn-ups have real fashion edge. YMC does a great pair of Japanese raw denim boy-cut jeans.

On the high street, try All Saints Roher jeans (£55). Wear them rolled up to show your ankles, with a blouse or shirt tucked in.

Q I recently came across the video for Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love. I was instantly transfixed by the black minidresses his dancers were wearing and want something similar (except not in the same awful, slightly sheer fabric). I’m looking for a modest scoop neckline, enough stretch to fit my hourglass figure, full- or ¾length sleeves and a mid-thigh hemline. I’m 21, 5ft 7in and a size 12.

A The trick is to find something classic but not too boring (you don’t want to be mistaken for the cocktail waitress). Freda has an elegant stretch-wool dress (£370, from matchesfashion.com). It dips down at the back for a subtle but sexy look (wear your hair up for maximum effect). For a more edgy take, look at Twenty8Twelve. This dress (below) has two zips from the bust to the hem.

Q I am six months pregnant and am looking for a dress to get me through the party season. If possible, I’d like to wear it for a wedding in April next year so I need something that works for breast-feeding, too.

A This wrapover frill-trimmed maternity dress from Isabella Oliver is a good option. It’s dressy enough for the wedding but comfortable and accommodating, too. Topshop has a similar dress in its maternity range, which comes with a corsage (£38).
