Adding insult to England’s injury, Michael Lipman faces a disciplinary hearing this week for stamping during the 32-6 defeat by New Zealand at Twickenham last Saturday. The flanker, preparing for Bath’s Heineken Cup match with Glasgow on Sunday, was cited by Andrew Prior, the disciplinary commissioner from South Africa.
It was not a good afternoon for England open-sides, since Tom Rees — he came off the bench to replace Lipman after 58 minutes — was sent to the sin-bin late in the game. London Wasps, Rees’s club, have their own concerns before the Heineken Cup game with Edinburgh on Friday because their casualty list from the Guinness Premiership victory over Newcastle Falcons includes Pat Barnard (neck) and Joe Worsley (ankle).
London Irish, the Premiership leaders, have double cause for celebration after Steffon Armitage and Toby Booth were named player of the month and coach of the month respectively. Armitage, the flanker, is the younger brother of Delon Armitage, the England full back.
John Smit, the South Africa captain, will lead the Barbarians against Australia at Wembley tomorrow in the centenary match for the 1908 Olympic Games. He will be joined by six other members of the Springbok starting XV that beat England in the final of the 2007 World Cup, backed up by Richie McCaw, the New Zealand captain, and, from the bench, George Gregan, the former Australia scrum half.
Barbarians (v Australia at Wembley tomorrow): P Montgomery (South Africa); J Rokocoko (New Zealand), R Gear (New Zealand), J de Villiers (South Africa), B Habana (South Africa); F Steyn (South Africa), F du Preez (South Africa); F Pucciarello (Italy), J Smit (South Africa, captain), C Johnston (Samoa), J Botha (South Africa), J Muller (South Africa), S Burger (South Africa), R McCaw (New Zealand), J Collins (New Zealand). Replacements: M Regan (England), R Blake (Australia), C Jack (New Zealand), N Koster (Western Province), G Gregan (Australia), O Smith (England), S Williams (Wales).
