Danny Cipriani, the latest international talent to roll off the London Wasps production line - though slightly higher profile than most - welcomed the arrival of a new club owner in Steve Hayes, with the caveat that he hopes the present group of players will continue together.
“Previous directors have put a lot of time and effort into the club,” Cipriani, 21, said. “Wasps have fulfilled their requirements on the playing side over the last decade, it's time for them to feel the benefits. Ideally, I would like to stay at Wasps, to get the structure in place, keep this squad together and move forward.
“Steve Hayes is a top guy and it's good for the club to go forward with him. If you look at our facilities, they're not exactly the best or the most pleasant or the most enjoyable. But when you are with everyone, in this environment, it is enjoyable, there's such a good team spirit.”
Cipriani dismissed the blaze of publicity that has accompanied his first steps in international rugby, provoked by his West End appearances. It would, he said, “drive me mad” to read as many column inches as have been devoted to Jonny Wilkinson, his predecessor as England fly half.
“The peripheral stuff could bring anyone down, sportsmen, musicians, it can get to you because what [the media] write is what people read,” he said. “I just need to go out and play. There's nothing more pleasing or exciting than winning rugby matches and doing it with a good bunch of guys.
“I've been here for two seasons and we've won two trophies, it's an amazing feeling. Wasps have the chemistry and drive to win. Some of the best coaches in the world are here. I want a long and successful career, but just now I want to get back to playing with a smile on my face.”
